Families, parents and students

How families, parents and students relate, split households, and adding parents by hand.

The model

  • A student belongs to one or more families and is enrolled in one or more classes.
  • A family has one or more parents (accounts that can sign in) and one or more students.
  • Any parent in a family can see and manage that family's bookings.

So a household with two parents and three children is one family with two parent accounts and three students. Each parent sees all three children.

Shared custody

A student can be in two families — say, Mum's household and Dad's household. Each family books separately with the teacher, so the teacher's slot count on Manage Slots allows for it ("+1 extra for separate-meeting families"). If the parents want one joint meeting instead, put them both in one family.

Adding a parent by hand

Open the family on Families and click Add Parent / Guardian. If the email already has a parent account, it is linked; otherwise an account is created and the parent is emailed a set-password link. The row shows Has not set a password yet with a Resend setup email link until they do.

Invitations

Invitations does the same thing with a code instead of a pre-made account: the parent gets a link, registers with their own details, and is attached to the family you chose. Use whichever you prefer; both end with a parent who can sign in. Inviting an email that already has a working account is refused — add them to the family instead.

Students

Students → Add Student needs a family (create it first) and, to be bookable, at least one class. For a whole school, use Import CSV.
